Did You Know?
Peers and Music

We become like the people with whom we associate. The world of behavioral psychology continues to point out the reality of personality modification through peer association. We are adaptable creatures and we quickly conform to our environment (whatever it may be) to perpetuate our survival. Therefore, if our children are going to become academically strong, it would reason they should be spending time in the presence of other successful students. With this in mind, consider these findings: Students in music are scoring 20 to 40 points higher on SAT tests, and the longer a student participates in the school music program, the higher the SAT scores.
Music develops the appetite for learning and creates habits of self-discipline and personal tenacity which carry over into every facet of school. Young musicians are skilled at concentration, alertness, memory, and self-control. These attributes are basic for success in higher education, but more importantly, in succeeding at life.

Uniforms

Concert uniforms will all be out by December 1st.

Adjusting the hem...
You will need to adjust the hem of the tuxedo pant to fit your child's height. Please make sure you do not cut out the extra hem material. These pants will have to be used for many years and for a variety of kids. Also, avoid using a fuseable interfacing (iron-on hem tape) to keep the hem in place...this stuff is hard to remove and is not a very temporary solution.

Uniform Pieces...
The following pieces are included in your uniform:

  • Tuxedo Pant (dry clean only)
  • Tuxedo Vest (dry clean only)
  • Tuxedo Shirt (launder - heavy starch)
  • Black Bow Tie (not included in saxophone uniforms)
You will need to purchase BLACK Dress Shoes and socks to complete the uniform.
You don't have to spend a fortune on these...any discount black shoe will be fine. Make sure you have black socks. No high heals and no athletic shoes.

If there is a problem with the fit of your child's uniform, please contact Mr. Ganus several days before the Christmas concert.

Region Band participants
You will need your uniform ready by Saturday, December 10th.
You will wear them at the Region Band Concert that evening.

Region Band Success

Not to toot our own horn or anything....

The Aledo Middle School Band did GREAT at the TMEA Region 7 Honor Band Auditions!!

Every year the AMS band participates in the Texas Music Educators - Region 7 Middle School Honor Band Auditions. This is our big fall project. Students work on a couple of pieces of music and scales. They perform for a panel of judges and the best are selected to represent their school in the Region Honor Band concert.

This year we did wonderful!! We have 61 kids that will be representing our band at the Honor Band Concert on December 10th at Granbury H.S. These fine musicians worked very hard to earn their place in this ensemble.

We took over 100 very qualified musicians to this audition. All of our kids were prepared and should be very proud of their accomplishment. To let you know what an accomplishment we made, here are a few statistics for you. Last year we had 32 kids make the region band. The highest number of kids any school has send to the region band is 41. This year we make up almost 1/3 of the region honor band. That has to make you proud!!

Good job to every student who worked and auditioned for the honor band. We are very proud of you whether you made the band or not. There is always next year :-)

M&M Fundraiser

M&M Fundraiser

We have a simple way for you to help out the band. At the Christmas concert there will be a table set up for you to check out a M&M Mini's tube. Enjoy the candy inside. Over the holiday, place your spare quarters in the tube until it is full. By January 13th, we would like all containers returned to the band hall.

This is great way to help the band come up with money to operate in the spring semester when budget is getting low (gone!). Each tube holds approximately $14.00 in quarters. The tubes also hold checks and cash...see how much you can stuff into it!

Solo and Ensemble

Aledo Invitational
Solo and Ensemble Contest
February 4, 2006

It is time for the next big event for the Aledo Middle School and McAnally Intermediate School Bands. On February 4th, we will be hosting one of the largest band events in the western metroplex. Around 1,300 young band students will be coming to the Aledo Middle School Campus to perform a solo for a judge. Participants will have the opportunity to earn a medal or a ribbon for great performances.

Solos have been assigned by your child's band directors. Students should be working on these solo's every day at home as well as in class. We want every child to do well in this solo competition. Have your child play their solo for you...you will be amazed!

Get a Tuner!!

Playing in tune is one of the most important parts of being a musician. Each instrument can be adjusted so that it plays in-tune with the instruments around it. Without playing in tune, even a great band sounds like a honky-tonk piano.

We would like to see every child in our bands use a digital tuner each day in class and at home while practicing. We have made a special arrangement with Johnny Paul's Music Shop to obtain a great digital tuner for our students. The cost is going to be $25.00 if we can order 100+. The tuner will come with a clip that attached to your child's instrument. The tuner will "listen" to your child play through the clip and will give a constant read-out on your child's intonation (being in-tune).

This is totally optional this year but will be a required item next year (even in the H.S. band). If you would like to get into our order, please send a $25.00 check with your child (made out to Aledo Band). We will make our order before Christmas Break and will have the tuners early in January.
