The Aledo Middle School bands are off to a great start! We are taking our time here at the first of the year to help our students form good playing habits and develop their playing skills. Each of our four concert bands are working much better than we would expect at this time of year and we are very excited about that! We have a lot of wonderful experiences in store for our bands this year, and we are excited to be able to teach such wonderful kids. Here are a couple of our projects that we are working on now: Intonation Charts On Friday, September 8th we will begin a short project working on Intonation Charts. These charts help each student to get to know their horns better. The goal of the charts is to sit down with a tuner and map out the natural sounds of each note (does this note play sharp or flat...and by how much). When we know the playing tendencies of our instruments, we will be able to play much more in tune.Scale Challenge Starting on Monday, September 11th, we begin the 2006 Scale Challenge. We will challenge every student in the four concert bands to play off all of their scales (total of 12)...BY MEMORY! We have done something similar at McAnally for a few years, but we want to keep those skills fresh and strong. Every child should have a Region Scale Sheet included with the music packet they received this summer or on the first day of school. There are a few additional scales located in the Foundations book that we will be passing out next week. Students who play off a scale successfully will receive a sticker on the progress charts in the band hall. We will also have a challenge later on in the semester to defend those stickers. We must keep our skills sharp.Region Band Auditions Every one of our Concert Band students has a copy of this year's TMEA Region 7 MS Honor Band Audition music. Auditions will be held on November 11th in Granbury. That may seem a long way off...but we are competing for a limited number of seats and that is tough. Students will perform for a panel of judges and the best students from our area will be selected to perform as the Region 7 MS Honor Band in December. What an honor. We are working on these pieces in class but this is an individual competition and whatever students put in to this contest...they will get out of it. Lets keep our tradition as the school to beat.

Directors have to spend a huge amount of time dealing with little things each day that keep us from working on our music. One of the biggest hassles is money. It seems that every month we are asking for money for a book, a contest or a shirt. To avoid this hassle this year, we introduce The Band Activity Payment. This one payment will cover all of the necessary supplies and fees that plague the directors each fall. This amount covers band shirts, books, audition fees as well as some of the new supplies that we need. The cost of this year's supplies is $85.00. The only major item not included in this is the Spring Trip (estimated to be about $120.00). With this paid you will be helping the directors have the money to pay for necessary supplies and contests without all the hassle of asking for money weeks in advance and then asking daily until it all arrives (usually weeks after the event). Please help us by sending in your Band Activity Payment as soon as possible. The only optional things that you may need that are not covered in the Band Activity Payment include: - Tuner $25.00 (most should have this from last year...it is a necessity this year)
- Alfred's Essentials Of Music Theory $20.00 (for Applied Music class only)
